Couples workoutSo you’ve thoroughly kicked yourself in gear for the New Year, setting goals, aiming for health and fitness in every aspect of your life, avoiding fast-food lines and office party temptations.

But are you running stag, or are you pushing it with your other half?

What I mean is: do you have a “Swolemate?”

Technically, your swolemate can be a buddy or anyone you consider to be a solid accountability partner, but research indicates that 94% of couples maintain their fitness programs when they workout together.

It makes sense; we tend to choose partners who have similar goals in life, so reaching and maintaining health and fitness with your person means that you plan meals, set schedules, and avoid temptations together. More importantly though, you can create and uphold a healthy environment where you and your partner can grow and stay injury-free together.

Orthopedic surgeon and fitness expert, Dr. Levi Harrison, created “The Art of Fitness” to guide people seeking to better their wholly better their lives. The good doctor, fondly known as Dr. Fitness, provides both a book and DVD, by which you can set forth on the journey to health and fitness. There are countless programs out there, but “The Art of Fitness” invokes the necessity of commitment, consistency, planning, and the essential times to rest and recover before moving forward.

These aspects of health and fitness can be applied to your relationship as well. You can build exercise routines and workout tips specifically for the fitness couple.

Sure, it’s a good idea to have downtime together, cuddling into couch potato mode for a good flick, but pairing up and sharing the new experience of learning moves together, overcoming obstacles together, and increasing stamina will give you plenty of time for rest and recovery days, and that’s when you can truly enjoy those movie dates when you’ve earned it together.

Sweating with your sweetie can strengthen not only your mind and body, but also your relationship. As they say, “Couples who sweat together, stay together.”

It’s important to remember that while competition is healthy, the goal is to share your passion and grow. It is likely that you and your partner are at varied levels of strength, endurance, and agility. Don’t let that discourage you.

Adjust the challenge to fit the needs of you and your sweaty sweetie. Before you know it, you will not only uplift each other, but lift up each other, literally. Gear up for the season, be it beach, wedding, or just for the health of it.

It’s time to grab your swolemate and set forth on your journey to health and happiness.
