Hiking for Couples

By Dr. Levi Harrison

Hiking is a great de-stressing date with cardiovascular benefits. This outdoor activity provides an opportunity to really enjoy the company of your partner. Consider hiking on a safe trail with a gradual incline depending on your overall fitness levels.

I recommend taking the following back pack items: water, sunblock/ sunscreen, food (trail mix, of course), basic first aid kit, map and a flashlight. Consider a hiking cane if you both choose a challenging path.

Hiking allows you to improve your muscular strength, endurance and cardiovascular health if you hike at a moderate pace. Because you are with someone, take your time and smell the roses…literally! Consider a romantic picnic when you reach the peak of your trail. Bring a toothbrush and sugar free mints!

The amount of weight loss or calories burned while hiking depends on your weight, age,sex and intensity of your hike. Average calories burned for 1hour of moderate intensity hiking= approximately 600 calories/ hr. if you are a male weighing 170 lbs.

A couple on a hike can invigorate their relationship and it is does both bodies a lot of good! You will be lighter on your feet after hiking and your hearts will be stronger together.

Keep on exercising! Exercise is life!
